A simple social networking site that has served as an online way to befriend humankind has morphed into something else, something much bigger and seemingly much more powerful: a way to understand, sell to, and otherwise handle humankind. Call this behemoth Facebook Corp. Or call it: life. The average user has some 300 friends, shares around 70 status updates a month, and spends around 10.5 hours a month peering into the site. Each year, represented by a distinct color, shows us how Facebook refined and expanded its grip on our digital lives, feature by feature.

This is how it operates: underneath each year, you will find notable achievements that align with particular revisions or fresh instruments Facebook infused into its lineup. Every functionality is denoted with a topped, circular month and a bullet-square day. To illustrate, a function denoted with 09 in the month circle and 15 in the day square signifies it debuted on September 15 of that year. By meshing minor, seemingly stepwise changes with major, game-changing innovations, Facebook held its users spellbound, its businesses dependent, and its rivals hard-pressed to keep pace.
